2020 has been a fantastic year for the LGBQ community: More celebrities than ever have proudly come out and have shown immense support for the community. While a person’s sexual preference is no longer shocking news in 2020, yet celebrities coming out and discussing their opinions on public platforms serve as an encouragement to the ones who are still struggling.

Lili Reinhart

After ending things with her “Riverdale” sweetheart, Lili Reinhart came out as bisexual on June 3, 2020. According to E! News, the actress came out proudly on her Instagram Story. Her coming out was also a way of motivating her followers to join the Black Lives Matter protest in Los Angeles. 

The actress wrote, “Although I’ve never announced it publicly before, I am a proud bisexual woman.” In an interview with Flaunt magazine, she also said that her bisexuality has never been a secret from her friends and family. But she was hesitant to publicly come out because she feared that people would not get her and think she was faking it for attention.

The 22-year-old internet sensation took to Instagram on June 15 to publicly come out as pansexual in an emotional Instagram post. Mongeau, who formerly dated pan actress Bella Thorne (2017-2019), talked about her sexuality out in the open and wrote, “I still struggle with it. I hate the boxes, I hate people telling me I’m straight or discrediting my relationship if I’m with a girl, but I’m proud to be not only a member but an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community, and I’m proud to say I will live my life based on loving people, not for their gender but their soul. Some people call that pansexuality, everyone calls me bi, I personally don’t find a need to label it all. Love and sexuality is [sic] genderless to me.”

The “Jurassic World,” actor proudly came out as queer in the middle of the Black Lives Matter protests. After joining of the peaceful protests in New Orleans, Justice posted on Instagram talking about his sexuality. He also mentioned how important it is to fight for black queer people. Additionally, the “All The Bright Places” star talked about his disappointment to see how certain people stopped supporting the Black Lives Matter movement when the word Queer or Trans was added. Along with the message, Smith updated some pictures with his boyfriend, Nicholas Ashe.

Jameela Jamil

HBO Max announced Jameela Jamil as one of the judges in a voguing (popular dance form among the LGBQ community) competition show, “Legendary.” Upon hearing the news, some members of the LGBQ community showed discontentment.  

Amid this, Jamil came out as queer on her social media platform on February 5, 2020. She wrote, “Twitter is brutal. This is why I never officially came out as queer.” She talked about her sexuality, experiences, and reasons as to why she couldn’t come out in the open before.

In June, the “Hairspray” actress took to TikTok to make the big announcement. She uploaded a video that shows her singing along to Diana Ross’ superhit song “I’m Coming Out,” with the caption “Hi, it’s Nikki Blonsky from the movie I’m Gay.” Later that day, the Golden Globes nominated actress went on to share the same news on her Instagram account.
